Barnton 1-1 Congleton Town
Villagers fight back to earn point
We picked up our first home point of the season on Wednesday evening thanks to Chris Smith’s second half equaliser against Congleton.
The Villagers will perhaps fell that they should’ve won it late on, but after creating a number of chances they were unable to find a late winner.
Following Saturday’s defeat away at AFC Liverpool manager Steve Lloyd made a number of changes with Callum Richards, George Webster, Sam Houghton, Chris Bandell and James McShane all coming into the team.
Despite the changes we found ourselves a goal behind yearly on, when Declan Fletcher was allowed a free header in the box to put the away side ahead. Undeterred by the setback the Villagers dug in and got themselves into the game with Jason McShane going close with a fine effort from the edge of the box.
But Congleton continued to pose a threat and Niall Ford was on hand to clear the ball off the line and shortly after we somehow were unable to score after a defensive mix up in the visitors’ box. The biggest scare of the half came when the referee awarded a penalty to Congleton but thankfully the linesman made him aware that the challenge was made well outside of the box.
Half Time: Barnton 0-1 Congleton Town
The second half saw us really come into the game with George Webster having an impact from right wing back, and he was on hand to find Bandell in space but no one was able to get on the end of an excellent cross.
The only chance of the second half for Congleton came after a speculative effort from well outside the box hit the bar.
Our pressure and dominance paid off on the 78th minute when Smith finished superbly when he found himself through on goal. The equaliser was fully justified and we had some fantastic chances late on with both Jason and James McShane going close with efforts.
The final seconds of the game saw James McShane hit the bar and the Congleton back line were able to clear their lines as they hung on for a share of the points.
