Barnton 5-0 Maine Road - Match Report

By Niall Owens

Villagers winning run continues

The Villagers picked up a fourth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon against Maine Road at a windswept Offside Trust stadium.

James McShane's men laid the foundations during an impressive opening half, that saw the Villagers stick four past the visitors.

Front man Lee Guirado scored the opening goal of the afternoon after only 9 minutes, before Ryan Malone doubled his sides advantage as he slotted home from his own rebounded effort.

Local lad Jordan Cobley then linked up with Luke Wilson-Jones to fire home emphatically on his first start after his return to Offside Trust Stadium.

Guirado was then on hand to head home from a pin point cross from Wilson-Jones to round off a flawless opening half for the Villagers.

Half Time: Barnton 4-0 Maine Road

The second half saw McShane's men take control of the contest as they carried on creating chances, with Owen Dursley and then Guirado being denied by a superb double save from the impressive Alexander Fowell in the Maine Road net.

Guirado's was once again denied a hat trick as Fowell denied him with another fine stop, before Arran Lyons pulled off a smart save late on to maintain his clean sheet.

Sub Ryan Wan then rounded off an impressive display as he slotted past Fowell after being played in selflessly by Guirado in added on time.

After the game we caught up with manager James McShane: "I'm delighted, more so with the second half performance. I said to the lads at half time that we needed to maintain the levels. We did that and despite playing against the wind during the second half we still created and remained solid."

He added: "Maine Road as a decent side, they worked their socks off and made it hard for us, there is no doubt they will pick up points."

Captain Sam Houghton was also in a positive mood: "We've now won four on the bounce and we've scored 21 goals in the process, despite scoring so many the clean sheet is massive."

Next up for the Villagers is a home clash against Congleton Town in the Macron Cup (3pm) at the Offside Trust Stadium.
