Villagers kick off 2019 in style

The Villagers made the perfect start to the new year with an impressive victory against an inform Stockport Town at the Offside Trust stadium on Saturday.

Goals from youngster Leon Wright and Ryan Malone in each half were enough to ensure that the Villagers rounded off the festive period with 7 points from their three games.

There was not much to report in what was a tight opening twenty minutes as both sides looked to take control of the contest.

Wright and Matthew Rigby both picked up yellow cards along with Festus Arthur, after a heated coming together following Wright's challenge on Arthur.

Just as it looked as if were heading into the break goalless, 17 year old Wright took it upon himself to give his side the lead with a fantastic solo effort that left Nicolae Stinca in the Stockport Town net with no chance.

Half Time: Barnton 1-0 Stockport Town

The second half sparked into life when Lee Guirado had the ball in the net but was judged to be offside and moments later he missed a great chance to double his team's lead.

The sucker punch from the visitors duly came from their first attack of the second half with Adam Etches levelling the contest up with a cool finish.

But despite the setback the Villagers gathered themselves and found themselves back in from just past the hour mark when Malone made the most an error from Stinca.

The Stockport Town keeper failed to deal with a long punt and spilled the ball at Malone's feet who kept calm to finish easily.

The Villagers continued to push for a third goal that would have made their lives easier but despite Daniel Jarrett having to be forced off with an injury the back four marshalled by Arran Lyons held firm.

The industrious Jamie Weeder almost put the seal on the game late on but was denied by a smart stop.

Despite not getting the third goal the Villagers held out and picked up back to back wins at home and secured a league double against their visitors.

Up next for James McShane's men is another home contest this time against second placed Wythenshawe Amateurs on Friday evening with kick off at 7:45pm.
