The Villagers fell short against league leaders Runcorn Linnets in front of a bumper crowd at Townfield Lane on Friday evening.
Manager Steve Lloyd was without the services of top scorer Chris Smith and winger Ryan Malone as Jack Woolley lead the line alongside Chris Bandell, Josh Crofts and Jack Irlam.
The villagers started the better of the two sides and adjusted to the tough pitch quicker and they found themselves ahead thanks to an outstanding strike from outside the area from Jack Woolley.
Within minutes the visitors clicked into gear and levelled the game from the spot after Kris Holt was taken down inside the area as Mike Simpson’s penalty just squirmed under Chris Cooke.
The league leaders turned the screw before the break and created a couple of chances and eventually took the lead five minutes before the break as Louis Corrigan’s free kick bent past the Barnton wall and into Cooke’s net.
Jack Irlam almost levelled the game on half time as his well hit free kick was saved well down low from Smith in the Linnets net.
Half Time: Barnton 1-2 Runcorn Linnets
The Villagers response to going behind was superb and they continued to push and hurry their visitors but were unable to create any serious pressure of their own.
As the contest wore on Linnets looked the most likely and eventually put the game beyond Barnton with Paul Shanley beating the offside trap to beat Cooke.
A late goal line clearance from Hamid and an excellent save from Cooke kept the Villagers in the game late on.
It was an encouraging performance from the Villagers who pushed and battled across the field and made life very tough for the impressive league leaders.
