Abbey Hey 7-1 Barnton - Report

By Niall Owens

Villagers fall to heavy defeat

The Villagers endured a torrid afternoon as they fell to a 7-1 defeat to Abbey Hey on Saturday afternoon.

Barnton were dealt with a huge blow before the game when top scorer Chris Smith was deemed only fit enough for a spot on the bench alongside George Webster and Brandon Moores who had picked up knocks in the week, elsewhere Ryan Malone and Jack Woolley missed out with injury.

Steve Lloyd’s men headed into the clash looking to pick up a second straight win on the road and looked to boost their survival chances in the process, but Abbey Hey’s Daniel Heffernan had other ideas.

The Abbey Hey number 11 produced a brutal first half performance that saw him net a hattrick inside the first 30 mins, and simply left the Villagers with far too much to do.
Heffernan opened the scoring after only 9 minutes after he’d headed home inside the area after some great build up play had left the Villagers on the backfoot.

He was denied a second minutes later but Niall Ford produced an excellent goal line clearance, but Heffernan got his second on the 19th minute after he’d been left with far too much time to double his team’s lead.

Josh Crofts was at the heart of Barnton’s best efforts as he produced a great cross that was almost converted into the net by James McShane, but it was Heffernan who beat the offside trap to bag his third goal and gave his side a comfortable lead at the break.

Half Time: Abbey Hey 3-0 Barnton

The second half got off the worst possible start for the Villagers as Peter Watling made it 4-0, George Mannion was then on hand to reduce the deficit as headed home from a corner to net his second goal of the season.

That was as good as it got for the Villagers as the home side put them to the sword late on. Adam Farrand scored the fifth goal from the penalty spot, before Watling got his second goal of the game two minutes later.

Sam Freakes was on hand in added on time to rub salt in Barnton wounds to consign the Villagers to their heaviest defeat of the season.
